Understanding abuse

When he accuses you of cheating all the time

Jealousy that never settles is not love and it is not insecurity. It is a monitoring system, and proving your innocence is the one thing that never works.

When he accuses you of cheating all the time

It usually starts as something that can be read as flattering. He minds who you talk to. He wants to know where you were. People say it means he cares, and early on it is genuinely difficult to tell the difference.

Then it does not stop, and it does not respond to anything you do.

The thing that gives it away

Ordinary jealousy is answerable. Somebody worried about a specific thing can be reassured about that thing, and afterwards they are reassured.

This is not answerable. You explain where you were and the explanation becomes evidence of how prepared you were. You show him the phone and he asks what you deleted before handing it over. You stop seeing the friend he objected to and within a month it is a different friend. You come home earlier and the question becomes why you were so keen to be home.

Every proof produces the next accusation. That is not a man who cannot be convinced. It is a system that is working exactly as intended, because the goal was never to find out where you were.

What it is actually for

Three things, and it delivers all of them at once.

It generates permanent surveillance with your consent. Once you accept that you must account for your movements, you begin reporting them voluntarily, in advance, in detail. You become the person who monitors you, which is much more efficient than him doing it.

It removes people. Not by forbidding them, which would be an argument, but by making every friendship expensive. A male colleague costs a night of questions. Your cousin’s husband is looked at. Eventually you stop going, and the isolation is your own decision, which is the point. Isolation is the load-bearing part of nearly every controlling relationship.

It transfers the guilt. You spend your days demonstrating innocence, and somebody defending themselves is not asking questions about how they are being treated. Anything he does can then be attributed to how much he is suffering because of you.

What it looks like in practice

  • Phone checked, messages read, deleted threads treated as proof rather than tidiness.
  • Timing your journeys, and knowing how long a route ought to take.
  • Location shared “so we both know we are safe”, one way only.
  • Questions repeated hours later to see whether the answer changes.
  • Your clothes assessed for who you might be dressing for.
  • Your children asked who visited the house.
  • Colleagues, neighbours or relatives asked about you.
  • Accusations about a paternity he has no reason to doubt.
  • Being woken to answer for something from four years ago.

Where this is enforced through the phone specifically, the technical side and what to do about the device both matter, because tracking software installed as a gift is more common than people expect.

Why proving it never works

Because there is no evidence that can establish a negative, and because the accusation is not a conclusion he reached from evidence. It is a position, and positions do not move when facts arrive.

Women in this situation often become forensic. Screenshots kept, routes photographed, receipts saved, a witness for every hour. It is exhausting and it never ends, and the sign that it is not working is that the standard rises every time you meet it.

The freeing thought, when it arrives, is usually this one: there is no version of your behaviour that produces peace, so your behaviour is not what is causing this.

The part that is dangerous

We would rather say this plainly than leave it out.

Sexual jealousy is one of the factors most consistently present in the worst outcomes in abusive relationships. Where a man is convinced of an infidelity that has not happened, ordinary reasoning is not available to reach him, and the risk goes up further at the point of separation, because leaving is read as confirmation.

If accusations are accompanied by threats to kill, by hands on your neck, by weapons, by threats to himself, or by demands to inspect your body, please treat that as serious and talk to somebody. That combination is the one we ask people not to sit with alone.

What to do

  1. Stop trying to win it. Not as defiance — just stop treating each accusation as a case to answer. It changes very little for him and it returns hours of your life to you.
  2. Keep the people. Whichever friend or relative you have shed most recently, get one of them back, even at a low level. Isolation is what makes everything else possible.
  3. Secure the phone. Assume it may be monitored, and use another device for anything that matters.
  4. Write it down. Dates and what was said. It is disorienting to be accused constantly and a record is what holds your own account of events steady. How to keep it safely is set out separately.
  5. Do not accept the search as routine. Where you cannot refuse safely, do not, and note it instead. There is no requirement to pretend it is normal in your own mind.
  6. Tell one person the truth. The gap between what your life looks like and what it is becomes very wide in this pattern, and one person who knows both is worth a great deal.

If you are the one being asked to prove it

You are not failing at reassurance. Reassurance is not what is wanted, and if it were, the last four years of it would have worked.

Nothing here says you must leave, and plenty of women in this position are not leaving. But it is worth being clear with yourself that the accusations are not a puzzle you have not yet solved. They are the arrangement.

Questions people ask

Is jealousy not normal?

Ordinary jealousy is answerable. Somebody reassured about a specific worry stays reassured. What is described here does not respond to evidence, and every proof produces a new accusation.

He says he only checks because he was hurt before. Is that fair?

A previous relationship explains a feeling. It does not create an entitlement to read your messages, time your journeys or decide who you may see, and it does not explain why the standard keeps rising.

Should I show him my phone to keep the peace?

Where refusing is not safe, do what keeps you safe. Just do not expect it to settle anything, and keep anything that matters on a device he does not know about.

He is demanding a paternity test. What should I do?

That is a serious step and worth taking legal advice on before agreeing to anything, particularly about what happens to the result and who else will be told. It is also a marker of how entrenched the accusation has become.

When does this become dangerous?

Sexual jealousy is consistently present in the worst outcomes, and the risk rises at separation. Threats to kill, hands on the neck, weapons or threats of self-harm alongside the accusations are the combination to take to somebody rather than manage alone.

If you need help now

If you are in immediate danger, call 112. To talk to HealBridge, call or send a message to +2348025170267, or use the form on our contact page. Every page on this site has a Quick Exit button at the top right, and pressing the letter E three times does the same thing.

Before you rely on anything on this page

We publish these articles so that you can understand a subject and work out what to ask for. They are written carefully and in good faith. They are still general information about how things usually work, and not advice about your situation, which we do not know.

This is not legal advice.
We are not a law firm. Criminal law in Nigeria is largely a state matter, the VAPP Act applies in a state only if that state adopted it, and statutory, customary and Islamic marriages are governed by different law and different courts. Two people with the same facts can have genuinely different options. Get advice from a lawyer who practises where you live — and if cost is the obstacle, ask us, because arranging that is part of what we do.
This is not medical advice.
Nothing here is a diagnosis and nothing here replaces being examined. Do not delay seeing a doctor, nurse or pharmacist because of something you read here, and do not start, stop or change any treatment on the strength of it. If something is time critical, go and be seen.
This is not counselling, and it is not financial advice.
Articles about trauma, sleep, money, debt, renting or starting a business describe what commonly helps. They are not therapy and they are not a recommendation about your own money. Speak to a counsellor, a qualified adviser or your own bank about your circumstances.
It may be out of date, or wrong for where you are.
Law changes, services close, numbers stop answering and practice varies by state. We correct what we find, and we cannot promise that every page is current on the day you read it. Where we do not have something confirmed, we say so rather than fill the gap.
Reading this does not make us your lawyer or your doctor.
No professional relationship is created by reading an article, and we cannot accept liability for decisions taken on the strength of one. What we can do is help you reach somebody who is qualified to advise you, which is what the legal and health parts of our work exist for.
We cannot promise an outcome, and we cannot make anybody safe.
A protection order is a piece of paper backed by an enforcement system that is inconsistent. A plan works until the day it does not. Anybody in this field promising safety is selling something, and the promise itself is dangerous because it stops people planning.

Do not let this notice stop you acting. If you are in immediate danger, call 112. If something is medically urgent, go to a hospital — you do not need a police report to be treated. And if you do not know where to start, that is a normal way to begin: use the contact page and we will take it from there.
